Charlton Athletic’s summer transfer plans already taking shape says Lee Bowyer

Speaking to London News Online, Charlton Athletic manager Lee Bowyer has said that the club have already started planning for the summer transfer window.

Over the course of Roland Duchaletet’s time as owner of Charlton Athletic, his tight pockets meant for many difficult transfer windows for the Addicks. Now, under the new ownership of East Street Investments, the club will be hoping for increased financial backing to help bolster their squad.

And, with the January transfer window still less than a month behind them, Charlton are already laying down the frameworks for the summer transfer window. Speaking to London News Online, manager Lee Bowyer has said that the plans are already being made, with the club making plans for a window in either the Championship or League One. He said:

“Going on past seasons we haven’t really done too much in the summer – it’s always been towards the end [of the window that deals got done]. We’ll know before the end of the season what’s going on – we will have plans for if we’re in the Championship or in League One.

“We did the same last year, we had different targets for each division. We’ll be on top of it. We start planning now – putting names on the board and trying to line some stuff up.”

Bowyer went on to add that he is hopeful of being given more financial freedom in the summer transfer window with the backing of East Street Investments heading into next season.

“I hope so, that’s what we need,” he added.

“If we want to be competitive in this division, which is what I want to be, then we need to spend money – we have to.”

In the January transfer window, Charlton were able to bring in four new players on loan deals, signing Andre Green, Aiden McGeady, Matt Smith and David Davis, with the three latter mentioned players coming on transfer deadline day.
