Ex-Sheffield United and Oldham Athletic forward Jose Baxter joins Memphis 901

Former Football League man Jose Baxter has signed for American side Memphis 901, as announced by their official club website.

He has joined the USL Championship side on a free transfer having previously been at League Two side Plymouth Argyle for the first half of this season.

Baxter, who is 28 years old, has reunited with former Everton teammate Tim Howard in America, who is Memphis’ sporting director.

The Merseyside-born forward started his career with the Toffees and went on to make 15 appearances for their first team. He had a loan spell at Tranmere Rovers as a youngster before leaving Everton permanently to join Oldham in 2012. He scored 17 goals in 50 games during his first spell with the Latics.

Sheffield United snapped him up in 2013 and he went on to play 124 times for the Blades, chipping in with 28 goals.

Spells back at Everton, Oldham Athletic and Plymouth have followed for him but Baxter will now be looking forward to a fresh challenge in America.

Memphis’ head coach Tim Mulqueen has said, as per their website: “Jose is the most accomplished player that we have signed at the Club as he’s played in the Premiership. He’s a midfielder that can break open any match with his passing ability. Our attackers will be the benefactors of his great vision and passing.”

In addition, Tim Howard has said: “Jose is a generational talent. His technical ability and toughness are unquestioned at the highest levels of world football. With experience in the English Premiership and Championship, we’re excited to have him be an integral part of our midfield.”

Baxter could make his debut for Memphis on their opening day of the season at home to Indy Eleven on 7th March.
