Ex-Middlesbrough striker Martin Braithwaite completes move to Barcelona

Former Middlesbrough striker Martin Braithwaite has completed a move to Barcelona, as announced by their Twitter account (see tweet below).

The Denmark international has joined the Spanish giants from fellow La Liga side Leganes in a controversial switch. Barcelona have paid €18 million for his services and he has penned a four-and-a-half year deal at Camp Nou.

Braithwaite, who is 28 years old, spent two years on the books at Boro in the Championship but struggled to hit the ground running at the Riverside. He left the North-East side on a permanent deal in January 2018 for Leganes.

He has managed eight goals in 27 appearances so far this season and has left Leganes in 19th in the league.

Braithwaite started his career in Denmark with spells with the likes of FC Midtjylland and Esbjerg fB before moving to France with Toulouse in 2013. He went on to score 40 goals in his four seasons with the Ligue 1 side.

Middlesbrough brought him to England in July 2017 for a fee of £9 million but he failed to live up to the price tag. He bagged five goals in the league before being loaned back out to France with Bordeaux during his first season at the club.

He forced his way back into their plans when he returned and scored six goals during the first half of the last campaign. However, he fell out of their plans again and was shipped out to Leganes before they made his move there permanent.

Braithwaite’s move to Barcelona now has raised eyebrows. Can he hit the ground running with the European giants?
