Newport County in the hunt for free agent full-back

Newport County are searching for a free agent full-back to ease their injury woes, according to a report by the South Wales Argus.

Current options Dan Leadbitter and Ash Baker are ruled out and could be unavailable for the rest of the season.

The Exiles are currently 13th in League Two and are 11 points off the Play-Offs with their season at risk of petering out if they are not able to bring in some defensive cover.

One possible option is Miles Welch-Hayes, who left fellow fourth tier side Macclesfield Town at the end of January. He joined the Silkmen in June 2018 from Bath City and was a key player for the Cheshire side.

The 23 year old made 58 appearances over the past season-and-a-half  for Macc and is weighing up his next move. Newport may also look to persuade ex-defender David Pipe out of retirement for the rest of this campaign.

Another couple of players available to Newport are ex-Blackpool and Bradford City man Tony McMahon or former Premier League right-back Ryan Taylor, who most recently played for Fleetwood Town.

Newport boss Michael Flynn has said, as per the South Wales Argus: “They (Leadbitter and Baker) could both be out for the season so we will have to look at free-agents. I’ve got one or two in my mind. Whether or not they’ll come is a different story.”

The Exiles take on Mansfield Town away this weekend before facing Salford City in the Football League Trophy semi-final next week.
