Sheffield United and Leicester City set to do battle for Bristol City midfielder Josh Brownhill

Sheffield United and Leicester City are set to do battle for Bristol City midfielder Josh Brownhill according to the Bristol Post.

There has been mounting speculation regarding the future of the dynamic midfielder with Burnley also said to be pursuing a move for him.

Doubts remain over whether he will remain at Ashton Gate as there is now reported to be a £7million release clause in his contract which is an affordable fee for a host of Premier League sides.

The clause is believed to allow him to leave in the summer for the paltry amount of £7million but should the interest persist, City may decide to cash in this month to obtain a higher fee.

Brownhill joined the Robins on a free transfer after leaving Preston North End and his impressive performances have alerted top-flight clubs to his availability with him having been a key figure for Bristol City over the last couple of campaigns.

City would prefer to retain Brownhill until at least the summer but with Leicester and Sheffield United both interested, their hands may be tied if they wish to recoup as high a fee as possible.

Lee Johnson’s side are braced for late interest in the 24-year-old central midfielder this window which may mean they have the possibility of accepting a larger fee that could be reinvested into other areas of the squad.

Bristol City are currently ninth in the Championship and just two points outside the play-off places as they look to sustain a serious promotion push this season.
