Rochdale sign Sheffield United striker Tyler Smith on loan

Rochdale have signed Sheffield United striker Tyler Smith on loan, as announced by their official club website.

The youngster will spend the rest of the season with the Dale.

Smith, who is 21 years old, has spent the first half of the campaign at Bristol Rovers and has now switched to their fellow League One side. He made 28 appearances in all competitions for the Pirates and chipped in with five goals.

He started his career at Sheffield United and rose up through their academy. He is yet to make a senior appearance for Chris Wilder’s side but has been a key player for the Blades at youth levels over the past few years.

Smith gained his first taste of first-team football during a loan spell at Barrow during the first half of last season. He scored 11 goals in 24 appearances for the National League side to bag himself a move to League One side Doncaster Rovers last January for the remainder of last term.

The Sheffield-born striker then played 14 times for Donny and scored twice under Grant McCann in the last campaign.

He is now embarking on his third loan spell in the third tier and will be eager to hit the ground running for Rochdale.

Brian Barry-Murphy’s side are currently 19th in the table and six points above the relegation zone. The North-West outfit were knocked out of the FA Cup last night after a 4-1 defeat against Newcastle United at St. James’ Park.
