Sheffield Wednesday join the race to sign Newcastle United striker Dwight Gayle

Sheffield Wednesday have joined a host of Sky Bet Championship clubs in showing an interest in securing the signature of Newcastle United striker Dwight Gayle according to a report from the Daily Mail.

The national publication report that the Owls have joined Nottingham Forest, Fulham and West Bromwich Albion in pursuit of the Newcastle striker, who would cost around £60,000 a week to sign on loan.

Leeds United had previously shown an interest, but they seem to be focussed on pushing through a deal for Southampton frontman Che Adams.

Gayle has been linked with a move back to the Sky Bet Championship for a number of weeks now with Newcastle United’s high demands proving the main stumbling block.

The 29-year old striker spent last season on loan at current Sky Bet Championship leaders West Brom, finding the back of the net 23 times for the Baggies, making him the fourth top goal scorer in the league.

He has also proven his ability to score goals in the second tier with Newcastle, helping them to lift the Sky Bet Championship title back in 2016.

He had fallen out of favour at St James’ Park under Steve Bruce, but due to injuries in recent weeks, he has found himself back in the first-team picture.

Gayle started last weekend’s away match with Wolverhampton Wanderers but limped off with a hamstring injury in the first half.

Luckily for his potential suitors, the injury is not as bad as first feared, and he is expected to return to full training with in the next couple of weeks.
