West Bromwich Albion played out a 2-2 draw with Charlton Athletic at the Valley in which the Baggies twice took the lead only to be pegged back by a struggling Charlton side.

Although Albion will have been disappointed to take just a point from the game but it was enough to take them back to the top of the Championship table with rivals Leeds United losing 2-0 at home to Sheffield Wednesday.

Here we take a look at three things we learnt about West Brom following the encounter:

West Brom have kept only five clean sheets in 27 games this season and although their attacking play has been of a very high standard, the same can’t be said of their defence. Sam Johnstone has been magnificent in some games but also looked susceptible in others when he has been required to command his area which needs improvement. Semi Ajayi has been an astute piece of business by the club and Kyle Bartley has been hugely impressive this season but both have been less than convincing in recent weeks and Bilic will be eager to improve his defensive unit.

Although the on-loan man only came on a substitute he showed some neat touches and real pace in his cameo appearance. He not only offers extra quality to the midfield but he also creates space for the other attacking players. Slaven Bilic admitted in his pre-match press conference that the Hammers have until the 27th of January to recall him should they wish to but the Baggies will be desperately hoping they can keep the winger to aid their promotion hopes.

West Brom have failed to win in their last five league games and that will be a worry for Slaven Bilic. They have conceded some sloppy goals in those games and taken the lead in plenty of them but failed to win. Albion took the lead against Barnsley, Leeds and Charlton will only drew each of those games. Their save in grace is that they still sit top of the Championship table and look in a healthy position for promotion however around a month ago they were 11 points clear of third place and they are now only seven. They will not want that gap getting any smaller.
