Sheffield United defender Heneghan transfer target for trio of Championship sides

According to Sky Sports Transfer Centre Live (Friday, 3 January – 09:56), Blackburn Rovers, Luton Town and Wigan Athletic are a trio of Sky Bet Championship sides interested in snapping up Sheffield United defender Ben Heneghan.

The 26-year-old centre-back is currently on loan at League One side Blackpool where he has caught the eye in making 18 appearances for the Tangerines, scoring two goals in the process. He’s also featured across cup competitions for the north-west coast side, including scoring in the Leasing, com cup game against fellow seaside club Morecambe.

Manchester-born Heneghan started at Merseysiders Everton, leaving their youth set-up for Stoke City’s Under-21s in July 2012. Two years later and he was on the move to Chester on a free transfer where he made 84 appearances (seven goals/three assists) before a move to SPL side Motherwell two seasons later, again on a free.

His one year in Scottish football saw him make 50 appearances (one goal/one assist) for The Well before a move to Sheffield United on deadline day August 31, 2017.  He’s only made one appearance for the Blades and has spent the last two seasons on loan at Blackpool for whom he’s played 69 games, scoring four times and providing two assists.

Sky Sports Live Transfer Centre Live says that Sheffield United are looking to sell him, preferring that course of action to allowing his loan to run. The entry on the Transfer Centre Live feed says: “[Heneghan] has impressed on loan at Blackpool this season and the Blades want to sell him permanently before he becomes a free transfer in the summer.”
