Aston Villa and Newcastle amongst four clubs chasing Boro midfielder Tavernier

According to The Daily Mail, a total of four Premier League clubs are keen on Middlesbrough midfielder Marcus Tavernier, including Newcastle and Aston Villa.

Newcastle, Aston Villa, Watford and West Ham United are all interested in Middlesbrough’s Tavernier, who has been one of the standout performers for Jonathan Woodgate’s side so far this season.

The 20-year old has 18 months remaining on his current contract and has caught the eye with two goals and two assists since the start of the campaign.

Tavernier didn’t start the season as first-choice under new boss Woodgate but has quickly established himself as a first-team regular. Since October, he has started every game, with the most recent game against Preston North End being his 17th start in a row.

He has been key to Middlesbrough’s recent resurgence, with four wins a row for the Teessiders, meaning they are just seven points off the Play-Off places.

Watford and Barnsley were interested in Tavernier in the summer, with the Tykes bidding three times to no avail. It is believed Boro want to hold onto one of their prized assets, especially with Woodgate’s focus on youth in the team at present.

The England Under-20 international is set to play his part for the side between now and the end of the season, and no doubt will be attracting further interest if he continues his fine form.

Middlesbrough face Jose Mourinho’s Tottenham Hotspur in the FA Cup on Sunday afternoon, and the four Premier League clubs interested will be keen to see how he plays against top tier opposition.
