Ex-Sunderland, Barnsley and Peterborough United goalkeeper leaves Bolton Wanderers

Goalkeeper Ben Alnwick has left Bolton Wanderers by mutual agreement.

The experienced stopper is now free to look for another club this winter, as announced by the Trotters’ official club website this morning.

Alnwick, who is 32 years-old, has played for Bolton since 2016 and played a key part in their promotion from League One under Phil Parkinson in 2017. He then won their Player of the Season in the Championship a year later.

The North-East born ‘keeper started his career at Sunderland and rose up through their youth ranks before going on to make 22 appearances for them as a youngster.

He was snapped up by Tottenham Hotspur in 2007 for an initial fee of around £900,000 and spent five years with the London side, spending most of it out on loan with the likes of Luton Town, Leicester City, Carlisle United, Norwich City, Leeds United, Doncaster Rovers and Leyton Orient.

Alnwick left Spurs on a permanent basis to have spells at Barnsley, Charlton Athletic and Orient before signing for Peterborough United in 2014.

He spent two seasons with the Posh in League One and was their number one prior to his switch to Bolton.

Alnwick is an experienced goalkeeper in the Football League and is likely to be on the radar of clubs in the hunt for one in January. Could a return to where it all started at Sunderland under former boss Parkinson be a possibility for him?
