Walsall remain in discussions with Southend United and Kilmarnock-linked winger

Walsall remain in contract talks with winger Wes McDonald.

The 22-year-old’s contract expires next month and he has been linked with the likes of Southend United and Kilmarnock.

McDonald joined the Saddlers on a free transfer and has since made 16 appearances for Darrell Clarke’s side in all competitions, scoring twice.

He started his career with spells as a youngster at Fulham and Crystal Palace before joining Birmingham City in 2013.

McDonald never made a senior appearance for the Blues and had loan spells away at Nuneaton Town and Solihull Moors before joining Yeovil Town in 2018. He was released by the Glovers at the end of last season and was handed a route back into League Two by Walsall.

The Saddlers’ boss Clarke has said, as per a report by the Express and Star: “Negotiations with players I like to keep to myself. We have been speaking to Wes for about four or five weeks. He is obviously doing well, we want him to stay.”

“I am not going to publicly come out just to please people and say this is what we are doing. We want him to stay. He is enjoying his football so let’s hope he does. But at the end of the day, we are like any other football club and we can go to a certain level.”

He added: “One or two players that are on short term contracts all of a sudden want to become millionaires overnight. We have to make sure that we’re a football club that do things sensibly.”
