Liverpool favourites to sign Coventry youngster

Premier League leaders Liverpool are leading the race to sign highly rated Coventry City defender Sam McCallum.

The 19-year-old has been linked with a number of top flight sides after impressing for the Sky Blues this season.

Leicester City, Chelsea, Aston Villa and reigning English champions Manchester City all want McCallum but according to 90min.com, Jurgen Klopp’s side are the front runners to lure the teenager away from the Midlands.

According to the report, Liverpool will sign McCallum on a permanent transfer before loaning him back to Coventry for the rest of the season so he can continue his development and get regular first team football.

Scouts believe McCallum, who has made 18 appearances for Mark Robins’ side this campaign, has the potential to be as good as Liverpool left-back Andy Robertson with some sources at the club even saying he could become a long-term replacement for the Scot.

McCallum joined Coventry in 2018 after briefly playing in the academy for Kent side Herne Bay who plays in the Isthmian League south east division.

He only made eight appearances in the 2018/19 season but has doubled that number already this campaign, helping Coventry maintain a push for the play-offs with the club currently 7th in the league.
