Leeds United brought “back into reality” after blowing 3-0 lead vs Cardiff City

Speaking to the Yorkshire Evening Post after the game, Leeds United striker Patrick Bamford has said that they have been brought “back into reality” after they blew a 3-0 lead against Cardiff City.

Leeds United seemed certain to be heading for another win on Saturday afternoon. When the Whites went 2-0 up after eight minutes it looked like it was going to be a long afternoon for Cardiff City and the points seemed to be in the bag when Patrick Bamford netted a second seven minutes into the second half.

However, Neil Harris’ side staged a dramatic comeback. Lee Tomlin got one back for the Bluebirds on the hour mark before skipper Sean Morrison brought the deficit down to one with 82 minutes on the clock. Morrison was then sent off two minutes later but with two minutes left, Robert Glatzel latched onto Tomlin’s stunning flick and converted with 88 minutes gone.

The comeback brings an end to Leeds United’s seven-match winning run and stopped Marcelo Bielsa’s side from returning to the top of the league.

Bamford – who scored twice yesterday – spoke after the game, saying that the team have been left distraught by Cardiff’s comeback.

“As you can imagine the lads were distraught. It’s the end of a long three-game week so it’s been a tough week but we should have won that game. We dominated the whole game, we knew what their threat would be and it showed in the end as well as that’s how they scored their goals.

“I think everyone is disappointed but it just shows that we are not the finished article yet. We know that we have still got a lot of work to do. One point is better than none but it still does leave a sour taste in your mouth.”

Bamford went on to add that despite their strong league position, the Whites can not afford to take anything for granted this early into the campaign. He said:

“I don’t think you can say two teams have ran away with it until come the end of the season. There’s no point saying ‘they are going to get promoted, they are not’, just leave it until the end of the season because it is such a crazy league.

“A couple of games, a couple of weekends can see a massive turnaround and changes the places in the table so for us hopefully this will bring it a little bit back more into reality that we are not the finished the article, we are not over the finish line and we do have to keep working hard.”
