Jack Clarke had a breakthrough season last campaign under Marcelo Bielsa. Bielsa’s decision to blood the York-born youngster elevated him to the first-team and brought about a transfer to Tottenham Hotspur and a £10million windfall for the Whites.
19-year-old Clarke’s breakthrough season at Elland Road saw him feature in 24 Sky Bet Championship games (including both play-off fixtures), games wher ehe returned two goals and two assists. It was output enough to convince Spurs to flash the cash and take him to North London in a deal that eventually, with add-ons, be worth up to £13million to the Whites.
However, things haven’t gone as planned for Clarke upon his return to his boyhood club. To press, he’s only featured in one game, earning a 19-minute appearance on his birthday against Luton Town. This inactivity has led many to think that he will be recalled by parent club Spurs and loaned out again to a side willing to give him extended game time.
Football Insider report that a ‘Leeds source’ has informed them that the club “expect” Tottenham to activate their right to recall Clarke from his season-long loan and send him back out for the second half of the season. Football Insider specifically name Nottinhgam Forest as a side “credited with interest” in acquiring Clarke’s services but they are in competition with “many in England’s second tier…as well as a few teams in the Premier League.”
Clarke returning to Spurs won’t be a big surprise for most Leeds United fans, the York-born youngster sitting down the pecking order and behind the sparkling form of Jack Harrison. With that borne in mind, Whites fans might want to get ready to wave goodbye to Jack Clarke between now and January 1.
