Leeds United fans can breathe easily at new striker news

Leeds United under Marcelo Bielsa are a much-improved unit. The improvement from previous iterations was plain to see in Bielsa’s first season and it is an improvement that has continued this season.

United currently sit atop the Sky Bet Championship and have been driven there by a combination of flowing, pressing football and a mean defence. The Whites are eight points clear of 3rd-place Fulham and are looking good. Suddenly, the Whites are looking like a team that are impressing observers.

It was these impressions and Bielsa’s improvements that convinced Arsenal to loan them highly-regarded striker prospect Eddie Nketiah. Much was expected of the youngster and it is safe to say that the Emirates starlet has provided a degree of that expectation.

He hasn’t started a game in the Championship for the Whites yet, all his appearances have come from the bench. Those appearances total 11 and have returned three goals and one assist in 273 minutes of football. Fans have been clamouring for more regular football for the Arsenal wonder kid but Bielsa has stuck loyally with Patrick Bamford. This has led to some fans, and media pundits, worrying that the Gunners will recall Nketiah upon the opening of the January transfer window.

According to The Sun’s Alan Nixon, White’s fans can put that lingering doubt far from their minds. In an article just breaking tonight, Nixon says that Arsenal “will not cut short” Nketiah’s loan deal at Elland Road “despite a lack of game time.”

This news, relayed via Nixon, will be of great comfort to those Leeds fans who might have been worrying that Nketiah was about to be recalled back to the Emirates and loaned out to another Championship rival of the Whites. The news he is staying will be very welcome indeed as many supporters are convinced that the youngster still has a big part to play this season in the West Yorkshire club’s hopefully successful promotion charge.
