Charlton Athletic agree deal for ex-Derby County and Cardiff City midfielder

A report from Football Insider has claimed that former Derby County and Cardiff City midfielder Joe Ledley has agreed to join Championship outfit Charlton Athletic on a free transfer.

Charlton Athletic have been dealt a number of injury blows over the course of the past few months, especially in their midfield with the likes of Jonny Williams, Jake Forster-Caskey and Josh Cullen all on the sidelines. Now, the club have dipped into the free agent market to provide manager Lee Bowyer with some more options in the middle.

It has been reported that the Addicks have struck a deal with midfielder Joe Ledley, who has been without a club since January of this year when his deal at Derby County came to an end. Charlton are said to have offered Ledley a short-term deal which he has now accepted, in time to come into the squad ahead of the hectic Christmas schedule.

The 32-year-old will come in and bring a wealth of Championship and Premier League experience to Lee Bowyer’s squad. Ledley came through the youth academy at Cardiff City and went on to play 252 times for the club, scoring 29 and providing 21 assists along the way.

He joined Celtic in 2010 and remained at Celtic Park for three and a half years, making 157 appearances. He scored 30 goals and assisted 24 times, picking up some experience in the Champions League before joining Crystal Palace in January 2014, where he featured 96 times before leaving to join Derby County on a free transfer in 2017.

At Derby, Ledley played 30 times, scoring two and providing two assists. He also has a wealth of experience on the international stage, having picked up 77 caps for Wales, playing a part in their run to the Euro 2016 Semi-Finals in 2016.
