Birmingham City defender could have loan spell cut short

Chelsea are considering recalling young defender Jake Clarke-Salter from his loan spell at Birmingham City.

The 22-year-old arrived at St Andrews in the summer and initially struggled to break into the first team.

However, he has since gone on to make rice appearances for the Blues following his Championship debut on October 1 and he scored his first goal for Pep Clotet’s side on November 30 in a 1-1 draw with Millwall.

Clarke-Salter’s performances and his potential as a young player have reportedly attracted the attention of several Championship clubs and The Independent says parent club Chelsea could recall the defender in January.

The youngster captained England’s Under-21 side at the European Championships but has not been able to break into Chelsea’s first team, prompting loan spells to clubs in lower divisions.

He joined Bristol Rovers on loan in the 2016/17 season before linking up with Sunderland, Belgian side Vitesse Arnhem and current team Birmingham City.
