West Brom veteran midfielder issues message to manager

West Bromwich Albion veteran midfielder Gareth Barry has reassured manager Slaven Bilic that he is ‘ready when needed’ as reported by the Birmingham Mail.

The former Aston Villa man had surgery back in March on a troublesome knee injury and missed the final couple of months of the season but he has now regained full fitness and is back in the Baggies setup.

Barry had to watch from the stands as Albion fell to local rivals Aston Villa in the play-off semi finals and admitted it was tough to take and now has ‘unfinished business.’

“Last year we were in and around it,” Barry said. “I felt I was playing well over the Christmas period right up until the injury.”

“It was tough watching the lads in the play-offs at the end of the season, I was gutted for them and when you can’t help it hurts more. It plays on your mind when you’re trying to get back fit so hopefully this season can be different.”

“At the minute I’m just glad to be back in and around it, I’m sure there’ll be tougher tests ahead. I joined the club in the Premier League and it really hurt to be part of a relegation side.”

“I was desperate to put that right last season, and nothing has changed since. I’m lucky the team are flying, but I’m sure the manager and I know the lads know that there are tougher roads ahead because there are a lot of games.”

“When things are going well football seems easy, but a couple of blips and it can seem tough again. I’m here to try and help the situation along the way.”

Barry has a wealth of experience under his belt having plied his trade for Aston Villa, Everton and Manchester City in the Premier League and could no doubt prove to be invaluable for the rest of the campaign as the Midlands side look to achieve promotion back to the top flight.
