Charlton Athletic boss says he had “opportunities” to leave the club

Speaking to News Shopper, Charlton Athletic boss Lee Bowyer has admitted that he had chances to leave the club in the summer transfer window but remained because he is determined to help the club be successful.

Since becoming Charlton Athletic manager, Lee Bowyer has earned a lot of praise from fans and colleagues. His performance in guiding the Addicks back to the Championship and helping them prove their right to be there so far this season has not gone unnoticed.

Bowyer was linked heavily with the vacant managerial roles at Stoke City and Cardiff City when they were available but he opted to remain at The Valley. Now, the former midfielder has been speaking to News Shopper about the chances he had to leave the club and why he remained, also adding that he has had a small discussion with East Street Investments – the group who are poised to complete a takeover of the club – about his and his team’s future. He said:

“I want the club to be successful that’s why I stayed. Everybody knows there was opportunities to go elsewhere and I decided to stay and hope that loyalty gets repaid.

“There’s been a small discussion (between Bowyer and ESI) just to say this is what we want to do. Tie myself and staff down, we’ll see if that happens, hopefully it does, but it’s not in our control, there’s a long way to go before that, the most important thing is the club gets taken over and we go from there.”
