Sheffield Wednesday boss Garry Monk expresses his relief after his side ended a winless run by securing all three points against Charlton.
The Owls are you to ninth in the league after a 3-1 win at The Valley in the lunchtime kick-off on Saturday with goals from Steven Fletcher (2) and Atdhe Nuhiu cancelling out Macauley Bonne’s equaliser for the Addicks.
Wednesday are now just two points behind sixth-placed Preston who face leaders West Brom at home on Monday night.
Although Charlton were not up to their usual standards, owing to several players suffering with injury and illness, Monk was still extremely pleased with the result and he praised the 2,500 travelling fans for making the trip down south from South Yorkshire.
Speaking to the Sheffield Star, he said: “I am very pleased for the players and the fans. We got our rewards for the performance.
“We haven’t got what we felt we deserved from the last four or five games but we got exactly what we deserved today.
”It was a really strong show of character, spirit and togetherness. I thought the performance was exactly where it needed to be.
”We did very well defensively. I thought we made minimal mistakes defensively and offensively we took some of our chances.”
The Owls’ next game is against fellow promotion hopefuls Brentford who outlined their credentials for a top six spot with a thumping 7-0 win over struggling Luton Town on Saturday.
