Hartlepool United have recently brought up a good reputation of developing players from their academy and turning them into young pros who impress week, in week out.
In January 2014, the January transfer window was coming to an end and it looked as if Hartlepool United completed a transfer window in which two of their players were subject to interest from clubs in higher divisions. But in the last moments before the 11pm deadline on the 31st of January, Hartlepool United had announced that they have sold star defender Jack Baldwin, 20-year-old at the time, for an ‘undisclosed fee’ to League One Peterborough United. The deal was undisclosed however Posh chairman Darragh MacAnthony had revealed that Posh signed the Essex born defender for a fee of £500,000. A bargain for a real talent who will play at a higher level.
This summer, there has been interest from many clubs for Hartlepool’s 19-year-old talisman Luke James, he scored 13 League Two goals last season in a Hartlepool side that struggled for goals in the early part of the season. Sheffield Wednesday were reportedly interested, but James later that month signed a new contract with the Teesside club. Then, just last week, Peterborough sold Britt Assombalonga to Nottingham Forest for a reported fee of £5,500,000 and then the rumours of Posh going in for Hartlepool’s Luke James started, a fee of £700,000 is reported – it seems a steal considering Posh sold their top talisman for a 7 figure fee. Following Pools’ opening game of the 2014/15 season, manager Colin Cooper stated that there had been interest in James, but no official bid. With a deal looking likely and inevitable, I look at who could potentially replace Luke James.
