“It’s improved quite a lot” – Woodgate give injury updates ahead of Middlesbrough v Hull

Middlesbrough face Hull City on Sunday afternoon at The Riverside, where Boro will be hoping to get out of the Championship relegation zone.

Previously, Middlesbrough had a total of nine first team players out injured, whereas now the picture seems a lot more rosy for Head Coach Jonathan Woodgate.

A lot of their first team players are getting back to full fitness, and with Darren Randolph and George Friend returned in their last outing against QPR despite not being 100% fit, Woodgate also gave updates on the pair ahead of this weekend’s game.

“It’s improved quite a lot,” he said in his pre-match press conference.

“Darren [Randolph] has come back from international duty and he seems okay. George Friend is okay-ish, we’ll have to see how he is.”

Randolph and Friend will be vital if Middlesbrough are to stay in the division come the end of the season. Both players are leaders in their own right, and have been key to Boro’s relative successes in recent seasons.

Despite the positives surrounding their number one and their club captain, Woodgate did say that three first team players do remain on the treatment table.

“Rudy [Gestede] is still out, [Ryan] Shotton is out, [Marcus] Browne is out” he said.

But there was also an update on the Teessiders’ back up ‘keeper Aynsley Pears, who deputised in goal against Huddersfield, Fulham and Derby before Randolph’s return from injury against QPR at Loftus Road.

“Aynsley Pears is a lot better than he was, so yeah, it’s looking a lot more positive.”
