Member of Middlesbrough backroom staff leaves to join Leeds United

Middlesbrough are struggling down in 22nd place in the Championship, and there are rumours of player departures as early as January to add to the list of worries.

But it is not player departures which have hit the headlines today, as Teesside Live report that a member of of Middlesbrough’s backroom staff has left the club to join rivals Leeds United.

Academy coach Andy Foster has now been appointed the Whites’ new head of academy coaching, where he will follow a similar role to the one he played at Middlesbrough until his exit earlier this week.

Leeds had been without a head of academy coaching all season since the summer, with Richard Cresswell stepping down from his position. He had worked closely with all age groups all the way up to the under-23s in the aim of having each team play similar to Marcelo Bielsa’s first team setup. Foster will now have this to tackle on a daily basis, but is well equipped to do so.

It is understood Middlesbrough instantly got to work on looking for Foster’s successor, including people already employed at the club, as well as ‘external candidates’. It was reported that they have now found his replacement, and he is to be notified in due course.

Boro and Leeds have often been regarded as two of the best academy systems in the country, and have been very successful in producing young successful players in recent years, including plenty of their first team squads at the moment.
