New deal for Leeds United man, turning down offers from elsewhere and a captains love

Last season Leeds rise from mediocrity to a real for within the Championship was a surprise to most given that the same squad had finished in thirteenth position the season previous. The reason for their transformation being the appointment of Argentinian coach Marcelo Bielsa.

But Bielsa insisted the talent within the squad was already there, but discipline and fitness lacking. Not for long though as one of the first decisions he made was to have the players collect litter from the training ground in order to realise what some fans have to do to earn enough money to watch them play week in, week out.

Leeds’ training schedule was also heavily reorganised with much more work involved for the players, over many more hours. Bielsa also had dormitories built so the players could rest during sessions. Off piste but humbling.

Pablo Hernandez of Leeds United (19) claps the home fans after the EFL Sky Bet Championship match between Leeds United and Bristol City at Elland Road, Leeds, England on 24 November 2018.

The Argentinian has, however, been outspoken on certain players who he feels have been important to the clubs transition in fortunes, with none more so than Pablo Hernandez, who Bielsa is quoted as saying is so influential that the Argentinian has even learned from him.

Yesterday, Pablo Hernandez signed a two year contract extension with Leeds, ultimately committing the rest of his career with the Whites and will now be in West Yorkshire until 2022.

That news was obviously music to the ears of the fans as Hernandez has been the most creative player they’ve had, arguably since their Premier League days.

Victor Orta told HITC how he had turned down offers from many clubs both domestically and overseas last summer, so at the delicate age of 34, Hernandez is still demanding attention for the right reasons.

He said: “Pablo had options in the summer, we had offers from clubs in England and teams overseas – but he believes in this project and knows he can play a huge part in the next two years.”

“I think Pablo is one of the best players I have worked with in my career.”

“He has an amazing ability to change a game, he gets goals and assists in equal measure and he is someone that the rest of the squad can look up to.”

With 12 goals and 12 assists from midfield last season, Hernandez certainly isn’t finished with life in England just yet, his team mates are also still aware of his importance to the team and a message from club captain Liam Cooper embodies just how much the team think of the Spanish play-maker.
