Former West Brom boss in line for shock return to management

Former West Bromwich Albion boss Alan Irvine could be in line for a shock return to club management following discussions with Scottish side Hearts regarding their vacant managerial position according to Sky Sports.

The former Baggies head coach who was appointed as Pepe Mel’s successor is believed to be one of the candidates to replace previous boss Craig Levein following his recent sacking.

Levein left the Scottish club in ninth place in the league but he has remained at Tynecastle until the end of the season when his contract ends, working to “develop and improve the structure of the backroom and youth operations” however, he will not return to his director of football role.

Irvine has enjoyed spells as manager of Championship side Sheffield Wednesday as well assistant roles at West Ham United and Blackburn Rovers with his last permanent role as manager being at West Brom back in 2014.

Steven Naismith has worked with Irvine at both Everton and Norwich City previously and it is reported that the Scot recommended Irvine to the Hearts hierarchy as a potential candidate for the role.

There is competition for the vacant managerial role with Neil Warnock, who has just left Cardiff City, Neil McCann, Stuart McCall and Paul Ince being amongst those in the running for the job.

Irvine didn’t enjoy the most successful spell with West Brom but his knowledge of Scottish football and wealth of experience could be an advantage in his pursuit of the role.
