Barnsley set to appoint Europa League manager within the next few days

Sky Bet Championship side Barnsley are set to appoint Wolfsberger AC manager Gerhard Struber as their new boss in the coming days.

The Tykes have been without a permanent manager since the start of October when they dismissed Daniel Stendel after a poor start to the season.

Truth be told, things have not improved since then, and the Yorkshire club are currently still bottom of the table, five points from safety.

Adam Murray has been in caretaker charger since Stendel left the club, but Ronan Murphy, a journalist for GOAL has confirmed that Gerhard Struber is expected to leave his Austrian club to join Barnsley in the coming days.

Struber has spent all of his life in football, and while the majority of it has been spent in his native Austria, he has a wealth of experience both playing and coaching.

He is currently in charge of Wolfsberger AC, a team that he guided to a third place finish in the Austrian top flight last season, and consequently earned them a place in this season’s Europa League group stage.

They are currently bottom of their group, but only three points behind top spot with a game still to play, so it is all to play for as far as the Austrian side are concerned.

It is the first time in the club’s history that they have played in a European competition, but the temptation of managing in England is thought to be enough to tempt Struber, who is 42-years-old, to make the switch to Yorkshire.
