Hibernian and St Johnstone battling it out for former Derby County defender

Hibernian and St Johnstone are battling it out for former Derby County defender Efe Ambrose.

The Scottish Premiership duo are both eager to bolster their defensive options by bringing in the 31-year-old centre-back, according to a report by Derbyshire Live.

Ambrose, who is a Nigeria international with 51 caps under his belt, was released by Derby at the end of last season and has been weighing up his options ever since.

He played for Hibs from 2017 up until this January and is now being linked with a return to Easter Road with their new boss Jack Ross in the hunt for some new signings. However, the Edinburgh side will have to face competition from fellow Scottish Premiership side St Johnstone.

Ambrose started his career with spells in his native country with spells at Kaduna United and Bayelsa United before a brief stint in Isreal with Bashdod prior to his move to Celtic in 2012.

He became a key player for the Glasgow giants and went on to make 168 appearances in all competitions for them, helping them win the league title four times, the Scottish Cup and the League Cup.

Ambrose left Celtic Park in 2017 for Hibs in a loan move that was made permanent soon after. He helped them gain promotion from the Scottish Championship in his first season and then establish themselves back in the top flight.

Frank Lampard snapped him up for Derby in January to add more depth into his squad as he guided the Rams to the Play-Off final.
