Chelsea join Man United and Liverpool in race for Wigan Athletic youngster

Premier League side Chelsea have joined Manchester United and Liverpool in the race to sign young Wigan Athletic striker Joe Gelhardt, according to the Daily Star.

Earlier today, the72 confirmed that Gelhardt had signed a new contract at the Sky Bet Championship club, which does mean anyone interested in the 17-year-old will have to pay more than they had originally thought.

But that has not stopped clubs in showing interest, with Chelsea the latest side to join the race for one of the Football League’s brightest young prospects.

Speaking to Wigan Athletic’s official website, it seems as if Gelhardt currently has no interest in going anywhere.

He said: “It’s a great privilege to play for this club. I enjoy coming into work every day, it’s a great environment. I love working with all of the staff and the senior players have always been very welcoming.

“The fans have given me a big boost with their messages of support. I just like being here, which is why I’ve extended my contract. It’s a big confidence boost when I hear the fans singing my name, it gives me that extra percentage and I want to do my best for the fans when I play. The fans are great. I love the fans.”

Gelhardt made his first appearance for Wigan Athletic back at the end of last season, and has made several appearances off the bench this campaign.

He has been told by Wigan manager Paul Cook to be patient and wait for his chance, and it seems he has no issue doing that.
