Leeds United and Nottingham Forest to battle it out for Sky Bet League One defender

Leeds United and Nottingham Forest face competition from Premier League side Aston Villa in their pursuit of Coventry City’s teenage left-sided defender Sam McCallum, according to the Coventry Telegraph.

The 19-year-old defender has impressed during his short career in the third tier, and already clubs in the Sky Bet Championship and the Premier League are sniffing around.

McCallum is believed to be one of the best young prospects outside of the top two divisions, and Coventry City boss Mark Robins is desperate for the club to keep hold of him this January, but is under no illusions that he could be leaving the club.

As quoted by the Coventry Telegraph, Robins said: “I would like to think we can keep him yes, but I am not stupid. Money talks and it’s not any different at any other club, regardless of where they are in terms of stature and division.”

“If someone comes in with the right money then people will be available, there’s no two ways about it, but I am not looking to move anyone on. I am looking to maintain, first and foremost, and then add if I can.”

Coventry City are in a promotion race themselves in Sky Bet League One, and keeping McCallum on their books is only going to strengthen their bid to return to the second tier of English football.

The West Midlands side, who are currently playing their home games at Birmingham City’s St Andrew’s, currently sit sixth in the Sky Bet League One table despite just one victory in their last five games.
