Blackburn Rovers defender thrilled with first international start

Making your first start for your country is a proud enough moment for any footballer, but to score as well makes it that extra bit special.

And that is exactly what happened for Derrick Williams last night, who scored his first Republic of Ireland goal on his first start for his nation.

Williams headed home from Robbie Brady’s corner just before half time to draw Ireland level after New Zealand had taken a surprise lead.

It was a much changed Ireland side, which is perhaps why Williams was in the starting XI, but he certainly grabbed his opportunity.

Speaking about the game, it was clear that he was thrilled to get off the mark for his country.

As quoted by the official Blackburn Rovers page, Williams said: “It was my first time playing here and to top it off with a goal is brilliant. It means the world.”

“I have quite a good spring so I just wanted to time it right and lucky enough it went in. I felt as the game went on we were the better side and we deserved the win.”

Republic of Ireland are in action again on Tuesday in a crucial Euro 2020 qualifier. Republic of Ireland are currently top of their qualification group, but a defeat against the Danes will see their opponents move above them in the standings.

Both Switzerland and Denmark are just a point behind Ireland, but have a game in hand each, so three points is crucial for Williams and co.

The Blackburn defender will be hoping to shake off an injury that saw him leave the field prematurely during yesterday’s game.
