Everton could recall goalkeeper from Reading loan in January

Everton could recall goalkeeper Joao Virginia from his loan spell at Reading.

The Toffees are prepared to bring him back to Goodison Park in the January transfer window, according to a report by the Liverpool Echo.

Marco Silva loaned the youngster out to Reading over the summer to gain some first experience but he has struggled for game time at the Madejski Stadium.

Virginia, who is 20 years-old, was signed by Jose Gomes who has now departed the club and it doesn’t appear he is part of new manager Mark Bowen’s plans.

The shot stopper has made just three appearances for the Royals and is way down the pecking order now.

The Faro-born ‘keeper started his career in his native Portugal at Benfica before moving to England in 2015 to join Arsenal. He spent three years with the London side prior to his switch to Everton.

Virginia has been a key player for the Toffees’ Under-23’s since his move to Merseyside but is yet to feature for their senior side.

He is highly-rated by the Premier League side and has represented Portugal at all youth levels from Under-16 to Under-21, however his loan spell at Reading hasn’t worked out the way it was planned to.

Virginia is now likely to return to Everton this winter and potentially be loaned out to another club in order to gain some more regular first team action.
