Derby County summer signing had doubts over the move

Derby County’s Graeme Shinnie has admitted he contemplated leaving the Rams after a tough start to life at Pride Park.

However, the 28-year-old has now established himself as a regular starter under Phillip Cocu.

Shinnie, who is a Scotland international with six caps under his belt, was signed by Frank Lampard who moved onto Chelsea over the summer and had doubt as to whether he was part of Cocu’s plans.

The experienced midfielder has slotted in nicely into the Rams’ midfield having previously had spells at Inverness Caledonian Thistle and Aberdeen.

He has spoken about his start to life at Derby, as per a report by the Press and Journal: “It was not so much a mistake, because I could never foresee what would happen with Frank Lampard leaving and everything else.”

“But there was a stage when I thought if I’m not going to play here then I’ll go and play somewhere else. It’s football. It’s what happens. If one manager doesn’t want you, someone else somewhere else will.”

He added: “It was frustrating. Going down to a new club was always going to be difficult, with a new manager coming in and a good squad of players. I always knew it was going to be tough. I wasn’t getting any chances. I wasn’t even coming off the bench and some games I was watching from the stands. It was tough.”
