Leeds United summer signing discusses Bielsa’s influence in making Elland Road move

Leeds United’s young French goalkeeper Illan Meslier has been speaking to French publication Goal.com about manager Marcelo Bielsa, saying that the Argentine played a big role in persuading him to make the move to Leeds United.

French youngster Illan Meslier made the move to Leeds United in the summer transfer window to provide some cover and competition for Kiko Casilla, signing from FC Lorient. Meslier is yet to make an appearance for Bielsa’s side yet but he has been speaking to the French media, singing the praises of the Whites boss.

Meslier spoke about the influence Bielsa had in helping him decide to join the club, speaking about his decision to join the club as well.

“A very important role,” said Meslier when asked how much Marcelo Bielsa influenced his decision to make the move to Elland Road.

“Afterwards, I also watched what the club did last season. They were not far from the climb (up to the Premier League). The supporters, the stadium… I really felt the club were very invested and that was doing everything to attract me.”

Meslier was then asked if Bielsa lives up to the name of “El Loco”, which the Argentine has picked up along the path of his managerial career.

“With us, no. He sometimes has mood swings or misunderstandings with his staff, because he speaks Argentinian, Spanish… He speaks Argentinian. But it’s so expressive that it’s easy to understand. And even when I do not understand, I have Benoît Delaval, who is a physical trainer there and who translates pre-match talks for me.”
