Peterborough United chairman says striker will smash Sky Bet League One transfer record

Peterborough United chairman Darragh MacAnthony has said that Ivan Toney will smash the Sky Bet League One transfer record IF he leaves the club.

The record currently stands at £11million, and that was the fee that Premier League side Everton paid Charlton Athletic for Ademola Lookman back in 2017.

But Posh chairman MacAnthony is adamant that if Toney does leave the club, they will receive a higher fee than that paid by Everton for Lookman.

As quoted by the Peterborough Telegraph, MacAnthony said: “Toney will break the transfer record for a League One player when he goes. If he goes that is. He’ll certainly smash the Posh record.”

“We don’t want to lose anyone in January, but you can’t guarantee anything in football. If we do lose anyone they will be replaced.”

Toney has had an excellent start to the Sky Bet League One season, helping himself to 12 league goals and guiding Posh to third place in the table.

For many Posh fans, it is crucial that their key players stay at the club this January, and MacAnthony has said that for the club it is more about bringing people in than letting people go.

“We are more interested in recruitment and we will definitely be bringing a couple in and there will be a couple of fringe players leaving. We want a central midfielder and a centre-back for competition. The owners will always back the manager,” he said.

MacAnthony was speaking on his personal youtube account, where he addressed a number of Posh questions in a video that lasted an hour.
