Ex-Bristol City coach explains decision to quit club and join MK Dons

Former Bristol City coach Lee Williams has spoken out after leaving the club to join Russell Martin as his assistant at MK Dons.

Williams had been manager of the Robins’ Under-23 side but quit before taking up his new role at the relegation-threatened League One side just an hour later.

Williams, who has been at Bristol City for two years, was praised by fans for helping to shepherd in a new, younger generation of players at the club and was seen by many as someone who would stand in should Lee Johnson ever leave.

However, in an interview with MK Dons’ official website, Williams has explained his decision to take up the new role and how he and Martin plan to steer the club away from the drop zone.

He said: “I’m really looking forward to it. I have been here a number of times before as an opponent and I’ve always seen this as a special place to work – to now be a part of that is really exciting.

“When I spoke with Russell, we had a good chat about football and how we see the game being played, as well as the standards he expects – we agree on a lot of things.

“I hope my experiences can assist Russell and I will be doing all I can to help him and the players. I see a lot of talented and hard-working players here and it’s now about building on the ideas that the manager wants to implement. Bit by bit, we will look to make that happen.”
