Swansea youngster stakes claims for regular first team spot

Swansea City academy graduate Ben Cabango has said he will “show what I can do” as he plots his path to regular first team football.

The 19-year-old defender made his debut in the Swans starting XI earlier this season and impressed in the Carabao Cup against Premier League opposition.

His performances have earned praise from head coach Steve Cooper and after working his way to the first team over the past five years following appearances for the Under-16s and Under-18s, Cabango hopes regular first team football is not too far around the corner.

Speaking to Swansea City’s official website, the youngster said: “I’m obviously in a really good position in the team now but it can be frustrating sometimes because I’m not playing a week in a week out, and that’s all I want to do.

“However, I understand I’m young and we have really good centre-backs here and they all are playing very well as well. I just got to keep working hard, keep myself fit, listen to the gaffer’s advices and hopefully my chance will come soon.”

Cabango has been on the substitutes bench in recent weeks for league games but has not been able to play thanks to the form of Ben Wilmot who has been starting in place of the injured Joe Rodon.

However, Cabango hopes his chance will soon come to prove his worth – and when it does, he has vowed to show everybody what he is capable of.

He said: “The gaffer gave Ben (Wilmot) a chance and he’s done very well and taken this chance.

“Hopefully, I can get a few minutes and show that I’m good enough to take that chance as well but, like I said, it’s all about hard work and training, then the chance will come.

“I will put everything out there to show what I can do.”
