Newport County manager speaks out after being linked with Cardiff City job

Newport County boss Michael Flynn has spoken out on rumours linking him with the current managerial vacancy at neighbours Cardiff City.

The Bluebirds are looking for a new person to try and secure them a return to the Premier League after Neil Warnock quit following three years in the role.

The outspoken 70-year-old said it was “the right time for a new voice” at the club and his departure has sent the rumour mill into overdrive with regards to his potential successor.

Charlton boss Lee Bowyer and former Millwall manager Neil Harris have both been linked with the vacancy, along with Newport County’s Michael Flynn.

The Exiles boss led the club to the Sky Bet League Two play-off final last year in a season which saw them beat Leicester City and Middlesbrough in the FA Cup before falling short against eventual winners Manchester City.

He has earned plaudits for reversing the fortunes of Newport County and despite being linked with the job at Cardiff he told the South Wales Argus that there is no way he would jump ship and move a few miles down the South Wales coast to manage the Bluebirds.

Welshman Flynn said: “I’m the Newport manager and I’ve agreed a new deal, so there’s nothing to say on that.

“I have a good relationship with Bristol City and Cardiff City and I’m sad to see a manager leave, but it won’t be me taking over.

“I was surprised to see Neil go because he’s a superb manager and if anybody could get them out of that league it’s him because he’s got the most amount of promotions in the game.

“It’s sad, but he’s a very honourable man and if he thought the time was right then who are we to question him?”
