Veteran defender’s future at Southend United in doubt

Former Premier League defender Liam Ridgewell could be on his way out of Southend United, according to The Echo.

The 35-year-old who has a vast amount of experience having played for the likes of Birmingham City, Aston Villa and West Bromwich Albion, joined the Sky Bet League One outfit in the summer but has only played 52 minutes this season.

Ridgewell joined the Shrimpers on a one-year deal in August after being released from Hull City a month prior.

He started in Southend’s opening league fixture against Blackpool which culminated in a 3-1 loss and Ridgewell was subbed off after 52 minutes with former boss Kevin Bond admitting that the experienced defender may not have been match fit.

Ridgewell has not appeared for the Essex club since and manager Sol Campbell told The Echo there is a lot of uncertainty over the defender’s future at the club.

He said: “He’s not training with us,” said Campbell. We’re still in talks about various things contractually.

“I’m not too sure if it’s all been rectified. I can’t say where we are at the moment but he’s not here and we’re still talking.”

Ridgewell, who has also played for the Portland Timbers in the US, began his senior career at Villa in 2002.

He never played full international football for England but did bag eight caps at Under-21 level.

Southend, who were humiliatingly beaten by non-league Dover in the FA Cup last weekend, have only picked up one win in their first 17 games.

They currently sit second bottom of League One having amassed a dismal five points out of 51 in what has been a disastrous campaign so far.
