Sunderland planning for January recruitment with striker in sights

Sunderland are ready to start planning for the January transfer window.

Phil Parkinson is eager to bring in another striker to bolster his sides’ promotion push, as per a report by the Chronicle Live.

The Black Cats lie 7th in League One but the North-East are in the hunt for some reinforcements to bolster their squad for the rest of the campaign.

They are prioritising a striker to help compete with Will Grigg, Marc McNulty and Charlie Wyke.

Parkinson has said, as per the Chronicle Live: “We need that [international break] period to reflect, to make sure we make the right decisions in January. We need to assess the structure of the team, the individuals in that team, and what we need going forward to make us competitive and get us right at the top of this division.”

Most teams look to freshen up their squad in January and we will be looking to do that. We had a meeting this week with Tony Coton and we spoke about every player in the squad, and what we feel we need in terms of where we stand at the moment. We have to make this squad as strong as possible so that when we do get a couple of injuries, we can cope with that.”

He added: “Our percentage of shots on target is low and we need to rectify that, and that is the most important part of the game. Our approach play has been good but we need to be more clinical – that’s crucial to where we are going to finish at the end of the season.”
