Derby County and Cardiff City set to do battle for Scottish attacker

Derby County and Cardiff are set to do battle for Scottish wonderkid Luke McCowan currently of Ayr United according to Football Insider.

The 21-year-old has had a string of impressive performances so far this season and has been one of the stars of the Scottish Championship.

As well as the two Championship sides, it is also believed that an ‘unnamed’ Premier League club are preparing to swoop for the versatile forward.

McCowan’s contract at Ayr United is set to expire next summer which means the Scottish side could lose him on a free transfer unless a contract extension is agreed by the end of this season.

McCowan has had an outstanding start to the season for Ayr, who are second in the Championship and chasing promotion to the top division to join the likes of Rangers and Celtic.

His impressive stats highlight the quality of his performances with him having scored eight goals in 17 matches in all competitions, as well as creating seven assists.

He has graduated through the ranks at Ayr after being signed in the summer of 2017 on loan from Annbank United.

McCowan can play on either wing or as a number ten behind the centre forward and his versatility makes him an attractive option for bigger clubs south of the border.

With his contract set to expire at the end of the season it leaves Ayr vulnerable and they will need to look at a new deal or be at risk of losing one of their prized assets which could seriously derail their promotion push.
