Charlton Athletic man takes responsibility for Preston defeat

Speaking to the South London Press, Charlton Athletic captain Jason Pearce has blamed himself for the Addicks’ 1-0 loss to Preston North End at the weekend, after he gave away the decisive penalty in the second half.

Charlton Athletic defender Jason Pearce has taken responsibility for the club’s 1-0 defeat to Preston North End, after he gave away the penalty before Paul Gallagher slotted home from 12-yards to give the Lilywhites all three points on Saturday afternoon.

Pearce was judged to have brought down Preston forward Jayden Stockley in the 58th minute of the game at The Valley, with Paul Gallagher’s goal ultimately being the difference between the two sides. Now, speaking to the South London Press, the defender has blamed himself for losing the game for his side. He said:

“I haven’t seen it back but I imagine it looks like a penalty. I’m quite hands-on. I just tried to stay with him and he’s just fallen. My arms are probably around him, it’s just how I defend. He’s given it so I’m disappointed and I’ve lost us the game.

“I felt they were better than us, we weren’t quite at it today as a team. I don’t know for what reason but we weren’t quite on it. Our passing wasn’t quite right. It wasn’t really us. We haven’t had a performance like that this season so as players we’re really disappointed. Being at home we wanted to do better. We’ll move on to a massive game next weekend.”
