Former Reading boss linked with shock return to management with Stoke City

Former Reading boss Jose Gomes has been linked with a shock return to management with Stoke City according to Berkshire Live.

Nathan Jones is still very much under pressure at the Potters but has so far managed to keep his job despite being second bottom of the Championship table and having only won two games all season.

Gomes was sacked by the Royals last month after winning just two of their opening 11 Championship matches.

The Portuguese had kept Reading up the previous season after steering them to safety but then left following a poor run of results.

Stoke are now eyeing up a swoop for Gomes as the pressure continues to increase on Jones. There has been much speculation of the Welshman losing his job but consecutive wins over Swansea City and Fulham meant he was given a reprieve.

However, since those victories, Stoke have followed up with poor performances against Sheffield Wednesday and Millwall and the heat is now back on Jones.

The ex-Royals boss has reportedly snubbed offers from abroad as he looks for a return to management in England following his spell with the Berkshire club.

In addition to Gomes, former Stoke boss Tony Pulis is also thought to be under consideration for the job but a lot of supporters are wary of reinstating their previous manager.

With Stoke still involved in a relegation battle, their hierarchy will need to make a decision soon in order to avoid becoming even further embroiled in a real battle to stay in the division.
