Manchester City and Manchester United battling it out for Rochdale starlet

Manchester City and Manchester United are battling it out to sign Rochdale defender Luke Matheson.

The Dale will face a major test to hold onto the youngster in the January transfer window with Premier League clubs circling, according to a report by the Daily Mail.

Matheson, who is 17 years-old, made the headlines last month when he scored for Rochdale away at Old Trafford against Manchester United in the Carabao Cup and has had scout watching him ever since.

The England Under-18 international made his first team debut when he was just 15 against Bury in September 2018. He then made his Football League debut in January against Fleetwood Town.

The Rochdale-born defender has since made 14 more appearances for his home-town club and looks set for a bright future ahead of him.

After scoring for the Dale against United, he said: “Obviously it was a bit weird seeing all my mates at first but they were just over the moon for me, whether they were United fans or not.”

“A few of them are Reds and they watched the game but they said they didn’t care that it was against them, they were just made up for me. I’ve had nothing but positive comments which was great.”

He has a big decision to make over his future this winter. He is being linked with both Manchester’s giants, but will he be a red or a blue?
