Middlesbrough plotting January move for Peterborough star

Middlesbrough are one of the lowest scoring teams in the Championship, and currently sit in 20th position, with the possibility of dropping into the relegation zone soon.

Middlesbrough Head Coach Jonathan Woodgate is keen to bolster his options in the January transfer window, and journalist Wayne Veysey of the Football Insider has stated they are interested in Peterborough United striker Ivan Toney.

There was interest from Middlesbrough in the summer, as well as Toney’s teammate Marcus Maddison, but it was believed Posh were looking for a bid in the region of £20 million for the pair.

The report suggests Boro had a £4 million bid rejected for the player, with Peterborough holding out for more towards their £10 million valuation.

However, with the Teessiders supposedly strapped for cash, a more expensive transfer fee may not be affordable for the club, unless they sell some of their star players.

If Toney was to sign, he would be in direct competition up front with the likes of Britt Assombalonga, Ashley Fletcher and Rudy Gestede. But with Boro scoring just 11 goals in 12 games so far this season, they are in desperate need of a new dynamic, and a new goal threat.

A number of other clubs are keeping tabs on the forward, and given his fine goal scoring form in League One so far this campaign, it is understandable.

Toney has notched 10 goals in 12 games, just one less than the full Middlesbrough squad combined, and he is currently joint top scorer in the third tier alongside his teammates Mo Eisa.
