Gary Rowett’s first words after becoming new Millwall manager

Gary Rowett has been appointed as the manager of Millwall.

The Lions have chosen him as the man to replace Neil Harris at The Den.

Rowett, who is 45 years-old, has been out of work since he parted company with fellow Championship side Stoke City in January.

He has also previously managed Burton Albion, Birmingham City and Derby County.

Rowett has spoken to Millwall’s official club website after becoming their new boss: “I spoke to Neil (Harris)quite soon after he left and typical of the character he is he spoke absolute volumes about the club, the people here and the fans, and the fact that he felt it was a big opportunity”

The Den on 27 October 2018.

We wanted to come somewhere incredibly passionate and with a real football feel to it, and I’m so excited. I’ve watched the team, I’ve seen the fans respond to the team, in particular the home games – the atmosphere is incredible.”

He continued: “We feel we can build something. We’re respectful of the fact that Neil and David (Livermore) have done so much good work to build the team to the level that it’s at. We want to try to maintain a lot of those principles and characteristics but then take it on in our own way and see if we can improve some of those elements.”

What I feel we can bring to the team is what we’ve done at previous clubs in the Championship which is, whether now or in the future, challenge for those top positions.
