Lincoln City’s Michael Appleton comments ahead of facing former club Portsmouth

Lincoln City boss Michael Appleton will take his side to face his former club Portsmouth at Fratton Park tomorrow night.

The Imps go into the game on the back of a 0-0 at home to Shrewsbury Town last Friday.

Portsmouth have made a slow start to the season under Kenny Jackett and are currently in 18th position, one point above the relegation zone.

Appleton, who replaced Danny Cowley at the helm at Sincil Bank last month, managed Pompey from 2011 to 2012.

He has spoken to Lincoln’s official club website prior to tomorrow’s clash: “I think they are in a false position when you look at their performances and the stats back that up as well. I am sure Kenny (Jackett) is giving that reflection back to the players. There’s no doubt about it again on Saturday they were very unfortunate to lose the game.”

They are much better than what their league position suggests. If they want to achieve what I would predict that their objectives are they are going to have get going very quickly, but we need to make sure it’s after Tuesday night.”

We have to use the fact that they aren’t in a great place at the minute in terms of results to our advantage.”

The Imps’ defender Cian Bolger is suspended and Appleton gave away no clues as to who will replace him at the back: “We will have to use our imagination at times, and it will affect us in terms of height lost as well because we aren’t the biggest team even with Cian. It’s an opportunity for someone to come in and stake a claim.”
