Former Middlesbrough defender linked with shock move to Newcastle

According to TEAMtalk, Burnley defender Ben Gibson is a surprise target for Newcastle United.

The report states that Burnley are ready to cut their losses with the £15 million defender, and sell the player on as early as the upcoming January transfer window.

Newcastle are the front runners in the pursuit of Gibson, which comes as a surprise given his ties to Middlesbrough.

The centre back came through the illustrious academy on Teesside, going on to make over 200 appearances for his boyhood club between 2010 and 2018.

Since arriving at Turf Moor, Gibson has only played 1 game in the Premier League however. A game that would’ve been bittersweet for the 26 year old, as he scored Burnley’s only goal in their 5-1 defeat to Everton back in December 2018.

It has been tough to break into Sean Dyche’s side, as he is behind both Ben Mee and James Tarkowski in the pecking order at present. But with Newcastle set to offer him a way out of Burnley, Gibson could grab the opportunity with both hands.

The Magpies do have a plethora of options in central defence though, with Ciaran Clark, Fabian Schar, Jamaal Lascelles, Federico Fernandez, Florian Lejeune and Paul Dummett all options for Manager Steve Bruce. To add Ben Gibson to the mix may not be a solution to the Burnley defenders lack of playing time.

TEAMtalk state that Bruce is a long term admirer of the former Middlesbrough man however, and would be looking to bring Gibson in on loan with a view to a permanent deal.
