Southend United in advanced talks with former Arsenal and Spurs defender

A report from Sky Sports News has said that League One side Southend United are in advanced talks over a move for manager Sol Campbell, who has been without a club since his departure from Macclesfield Town earlier on this season.

League One side Southend United have been on the lookout for a new manager after they opted to sack Kevin Bond after their poor start to the season. Since then, they have been linked with a number of managers. Henrik Larsson looked set to take up the post at Roots Hall before talks fell through and now, they have made their move to try and bring Sol Campbell into the club.

The two parties are in advanced talks over a deal which will see Campbell become manager at Roots Hall as they look to bring in someone who can turn around their dreadful start to the season. Southend United currently sit in 22nd place in the League One table, above only Bolton Wanderers. They have picked up just five points from 13 games, winning once and drawing twice along the way.

Campbell made his managerial debut with Macclesfield Town and impressed with the Silkmen in what was a difficult job. He helped steer the club clear of the League Two relegation zone under a tight budget and started the season off well before departing the club by mutual consent. After his departure, the club have continued to perform, sitting in 9th place after 14 matches.

With advanced talks taking place, it will be interesting to see if Southend can come to an agreement with Campbell to bring him in as manager at Roots Hall.
