New Sunderland boss wants two backroom staff members from Bolton Wanderers

The new Sunderland manager Phil Parkinson wants to reunite with Bolton Wanderers’ goalkeeping coach Lee Butler and fitness coach Nick Allamby.

Parkinson, who took over from Jack Ross, wants to bring his two former Trotters’ colleagues to the Stadium of Light, according to a report by The Bolton News.

Parkinson was quick to bring Steve Parkin to the North-East with him as his assistant but is now eager to beef up his backroom staff as he targets promotion to the Championship.

The former Colchester United, Hull City, Charlton Athletic, Bradford City and Bolton boss lost his first game in charge of the Black Cats 1-0 against Wycombe Wanderers at the weekend.

Butler, who spent his playing career as a ‘keeper for the likes of Aston Villa, Barnsley and Wigan Athletic, had a spell as assistant manager of FC Halifax Town before becoming Doncaster Rovers’ goalkeeping coach.

He then linked up with Parkinson in the same role at Bradford City before moving to Bolton with him in 2016.

Allamby joined the North-West side at the same time as Parkinson and Butler. The experienced fitness coach worked at Middlesbrough for nine years before joining Bradford as their head of sports performance. He then switched to Bolton three years ago and is still there now.

Bringing Butler and Allamby to Sunderland would be a sensible move for Parkinson and it would be useful for him to have two trusted companions working with him once again.
